Oregon Historic Destinations

Oregon History Destinations Take a stroll through time and walk in the steps of those who made Oregon their home. Stay in a home or inn that has been lovingly restored to its original grandeur. It’s time travel without leaving the 21st Century. In rural Oregon, you walk into a country grocery store, the heavy door creaking closed behind you, and you have stepped back 100 years.

Walk the streets of Fossil and Joseph or the old neighborhoods of Portland and McMinnville. Our Innkeepers are the Stewards of our great state and invite you to explore our historic destinations. Try to include a visit to one of our many Inns located on the Oregon Coast near Historic Light Houses.

History runs deep across Oregon with fascinating, colorful and surprising stories. Oregon’s pioneer cemeteries are heritage sites and offer a peak into Oregon’s past. Many host geocaches for an added adventure.

The Hoover-Minthorn House in Newberg is now a museum celebrating President Herbert Hoover’s years living there in Newberg during his childhood. When the 11 year old Hoover arrived here from Iowa in 1885 to live with his uncle John Minthorn and family, he joined in the task of making pear butter. He was told he could eat as many pears as he liked. His experience with pears is best expressed by his own words, “I liked them, but after two days of almost exclusive pear diet, I did not eat pears again for years.” Herbert Hoover went on to become the 31st President of the United States. The 144 year old Hoover-Minthorn Tree still lives in the gardens
